Route News 2019

Changes to bus services in and around Peterborough (latest items first). For older news see the Archive page.

National Express Coaches

bullet I've now had a chance to update the timetable of National Express coaches serving Peterborough (see the menu on the left under Timetables). There are many changes, the most recent of which was the withdrawal of route 448 to Hull via Sleaford, Louth and Grimsby from November 25th, which also means a reduction in the service to London from four daily coaches to three. In partial replacement, Skegness and Mablethorpe service 449 was extended northwards to Hull via Grimsby. Route 447, Hull via Lincoln, no longer calls at Newark.

Delaine 205 to be withdrawn

bullet Delaine service 205 Stamford - Wittering - Wansford - Peterborough, which was taken over from Centrebus last year, will run for the last time on December 20th as falling patronage has made it uneconomic to run. From January 2nd Peterborough City Council in conjunction with Lincolnshire County Council is introducing a single timetabled Monday to Friday CallConnect journey from Wittering to Peterborough in partial replacement. This will leave Wittering at 0735 and return from Peterborough at 1745, numbered 48, and unlike the Delaine route will once again serve St Georges Road (Spar shop) as well as the Post Office stop. At other times demand responsive CallConnect journeys to Stamford or Peterborough can be booked online (lincsbus.info) or by calling 0345 263 8153.

Minor Changes to Stagecoach X4 timetable

bullet From Sunday July 28th Stagecoach X4 will have a revised timetable affecting certain peak hour and evening journeys. Lynch Wood commuters should note that the 0854 from Peterborough is retimed to 0845, whilst other Mon-Fri changes affect the 1525 (now 1520) and the 1915, 2015 and 2115 departures which are all 5 minutes later. The 1605 runs at 1610 on school holidays, and on Saturdays the 2100 changes to 2105.

bullet Journeys towards Peterborough are largely unchanged but there are variations of a few minutes or so at peak times.

bullet For X4 destinations beyond Oundle please refer to the full X4 timetable (under ROUTES) as the destination pages will no longer be compiled in order to reduce my workload.

The bus will also pick up at Market Deeping Market Place (1005) and Spalding Bus Station (1035). The return journey will leave Skegness at 1730 and Boston at 1815, arriving back in Peterborough at 1930.

X4 temporary divertion via Cotterstock

bullet Further to the diversion of route X4 via the Oundle bypass and Barnwell due to the weight restriction at Oundle (see below), all X4 journeys are currently diverted via Cotterstock instead of Barnwell due to the roadworks at the Barnwell junction. This is an interesting diversion through a pretty village and worth a ride out!

Great Northern Rail Tickets Improved

bullet Since compiling the list of 2019 walk-on rail fares from Peterborough to London I have discovered with surprise that Great Northern has scrapped the evening peak restriction from London on the Off-Peak Day Return (£30.10) and the equivalent Off-Peak Day Travelcard (£38.20), which is great news. They have also introduced a GN Super Off-Peak Day Return on weekdays (not to be confused with the weekend ticket of the same name!) which is slightly cheaper at £29.20 (Day Travelcard £37.10) but it has a more stringent morning restriction (can't arrive in London before 1055) and an evening peak restriction (not 1629-1902 from London). I have added the new ticket to the list as a footnote.

bullet Regarding single tickets, there is an equivalent Great Northern Super Off-Peak Day Single as well, at £29.10 just 10p cheaper than the equivalent return. The normal Great Northern Off-Peak day single (£30.00) is no longer restricted during the evening peak.

Changes to Stagecoach X4

bullet From January 27th Stagecoach route X4 Peterborough - Northampton has a new timetable and a revised route in Oundle due to a new weight restriction on the river bridge at Oundle. Buses from Peterborough are now taking the much longer route along the Oundle bypass, reaching Oundle via Barnwell Road and Mill Road. After serving a new stop in West Street just before the left turn into New Street, buses then head north up the Glapthorn Road, turn right into New Road and loop back into town to serve the normal stop in the Market Place. Buses towards Peterborough also perform the same loop in Oundle, serving stops in the same order as the buses from Peterborough. That adds nearly five miles to the route with inevitable timetable changes and earlier departures in both directions.

bullet Journeys to Oundle and beyond via Lynch Wood take an extra 10 to 12 minutes. However, more journeys are now running direct between Peterborough and Warmington, missing out Orton Waterville, Lynch Wood, Alwalton and Elton. The full timetable in pdf format is available by clicking on ROUTES - the timetable also includes a plan of the new route through Oundle. Destination pages have now been updated. Apologies for the delay in updating the website but this has been due to pressure of work (blame my boss).

Changes to Rail Fares from January 2019

bullet Rail Fares increased by an average of 3.1% from January 2nd. I have updated the summary of walk-on Rail Fares from Peterborough to London, which includes day return, period return and single tickets.

Changes to Delaine services in January 2019

bullet From January 2nd Delaine 203 Stamford - Market Deeping will be extended to Spalding via Deeping St James replacing Shaws route 100. Note that Delaine's 203 runs only on Mondays to Fridays so Deeping to Spalding loses its Saturday service. Also the 203 will take a more direct route so the Park Estate in Deeping will no longer be served, and the same applies to Cradge Bank in Spalding. Shaws ran the route for 34 years and that leaves Shaws with just the once weekly Peakirk to Peterborough service.

bullet From January 5th Delaine 205 Peterborough - Wansford - Wittering - Stamford (Centrebus route 9 until taken over by Delaine in October) will be reduced in frequency and the Saturday service will be withdrawn.

bullet From January 6th Delaine 101/102 will have a revised timetable, partly to give additional running time at peak times due to congestion. There will be some earlier departures, and the 1615 route 102 from Peterborough is replaced by a journey at 1645. Route 102 in Deeping St James will operate in both directions via Burchnall Close, Campion Drive and Towngate East instead of performing a loop, terminating near Tesco in Godsey Lane before retracing its steps (apart from journeys to Bourne which will not serve Godsey Lane, also some early journeys to Peterborough which start at Towngate East).

bullet Destination pages have now been updated, and links to the new timetables in pdf format can be found on the Routes page
